While first shown in 1966 the first production model of the De Tomaso Mangusta was released in 1967. The prototype of the Mangusta was called the 70P and was labeled as a competitor of the Shelby Cobra.
The 4729cc engine was capable of propelling the Mangusta up to speeds of 250 km/h. Except one custom built Mangusta produced for a GM Vise president all of the Mangustas produced came with a Ford engine.
Only 402 of these high performance machines were built with over half of them being sold in the United States. In total of the 402 cars built 250 of the went into the US market.
It is interesting that only two models of Mangusta were produced although over the years there were many changes to the first model which was a spider. The second model was custom produced for one person as a Hard-Top Spider which is shown in our picture of the Mangusta.
Although many changes were made to the design of the De Tomaso Mangusta, the final production versions were brought back to the original design specification due to the pressure from Mangusta enthusiasts.
